The Bible tells us that the Devil is the father of lies.
He is a deceiver, manipulator, and liar.
As a liar, he has one tool that does the most damage and is the most brutal of all his lies.
John 8:44 tells us that the Devil has “…no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies”.
John 8:44 (NIV): 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
To illustrate how the devil deceives us, it’s good to start with a story….
(It’s a fictional story on one hand, but it’s a true story in many ways).
The Father of Lies:
The Devil’s Boardroom
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12)
Once every quarter, Lucifer (a.k.a the father of lies) meets in the deep recesses of Hell with his top leaders and executives in what is commonly referred to in the demonic kingdom as “the boardroom”.
It is an opulent room that only the Devil’s inner circle may enter. Shiny black marble floors reflect the dark desires of those present at these meetings.
They sit in towering leather chairs around an over-sized granite conference table, while the Devil himself hands out assignments for the upcoming quarter.
In the center of the table is a liquid statue of a beast with ten horns and seven heads.
Raised, glowing letters float in front of it that read: “Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diamonds, and on his heads were blasphemous names”.
As the devil calls the meeting to order with his 7 top-level demons, he begins to give orders for the next quarter of the year.
To one he assigns a church in Georgia, whose members are beginning to be filled with the Spirit of God and are beginning to take the decree to go and make disciples very seriously.
“Attack the leader” he says. “Build him up. Stroke his ego, make everything go his way…. and let Pride be his downfall, for when men become prideful and arrogant, they undermine everything they stand for and generally make stupid decisions.”
To another demon, he orders a focus on young ladies and the death of their children.
He assigns this task to Asmodeus, the demon of lust.
“Asmodeus, I want you to focus on girls under the age of 20. Bring a young, handsome man into their lives, break down their barriers with talk of love and ‘forever’, and see it through until they’re pregnant”.
Then with a snicker, he said,
“When the woman has conceived, whisper in her ear…. Speak of shame and sin and unworthiness. I have been called the father of lies…. let’s not disappoint!”
He continues, “Lead her to the conclusion that abortion is the ONLY way out. This will destroy her emotionally and spiritually for years to come. I expect your numbers to be greater than last quarter so put some numbers on the board!”
Around the table he went, assigning tasks meant to bring harm to humanity and separate people from their maker.
Soon he had passed out all his assignments.
The only demon without a job was Apothárrynsi̱.
At this point, Lucifer motions to his soldiers (who were standing at the door) to usher everyone out of the room.
He tilts his head, points his long black finger across the table and says, “Except for you Apothárrynsi̱. I have a special assignment for you.”
When everyone was gone, Lucifer invited Apothárrynsi̱ to come sit next to him.
“Yes, my Lord?” Apothárrynsi̱ said.
Lucifer’s eyes began to put off an orange glow as his excitement intensified.
“I am going to give you the most important job of the year.”
“Do you remember the young lad I assigned to you as a project almost 10 years ago?
Apothárrynsi̱ smiled a sly smile and replied “Yes. I remember him well. He was only 13 and I gave him hell! His name was… eh… what was it…”
“…Oh yes, his name was EveryMan.”
“Yes”, Lucifer said, “That’s him. Well… I have on good authority that he is destined for greatness.”
Apothárrynsi̱ looked in disbelief and then started laughing,”Master, if I remember correctly, he lives in a small town in Iowa? … you can’t be serious”.
At this, Lucifer swiftly stood up.
His eyes went from glowing to a deep, dark, liquid black as his anger rose.”
His presence filled the room with evil and Apothárrynsi̱ got silent.
Lucifer’s voice echoed in the board room so much so that all the demons in the depths of Hell heard his thunderous voice, “DO YOU NOT KNOW?!” He yelled! “EveryMan has been anointed for greatness by the Living God! Why do you think you spent a year with him!”
Apothárrynsi̱ was silent for a moment before speaking.
“But Master… I orchestrated his rape by multiple friends and family in a 6 month time span. I followed that up with a horrific traffic accident taking his entire family… leaving him confined to a wheelchair for rest of his existence.”
“To top it off, the Minion you assigned to him the following year afflicted him with deep depression… depression so severe he was an alcoholic and addicted to meth by the time he turned 15. Then, at 15, he tried to take his own life and was unsuccessful, scarring his face for life.”
Apothárrynsi̱ stood up and bowed to Lucifer as he continued, “I do not mean any disrespect my lord, but I don’t see how ‘greatness’ is in the future of EveryMan…. He’s still physically and mentally crippled by the years we worked on him.”
Lucifer’s eyes grew even darker and more intense. His head lowered and this time his voice was a raspy whisper.
“Unfortunately, I’m afraid all you did was drive him to his Maker.
He leaned into God after he pulled away,
AND NOW…
He serves the Great I AM.
He serves the God of Hope…
the God of 2nd chances!
He serves the Alpha and the Omega,
The Beginning and the End.
His God gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless (Isaiah 40:29)
EveryMan has been anointed with the Spirit of God which is within him!
Do NOT underestimate the anointing!
His afflictions will inspire hope.
His pain will bring healing.
His suffering will encourage others.
He will RISE and influence others to do the same!
You only made him stronger.
I fear the damage he will do to MY kingdom.”
Apothárrynsi̱ looked at his master and stood back up, “Give me an order and I’ll do it. I am a soldier. You separated me from the others for a reason, I do NOT fail! Tell me my directive so I may destroy him once and for all and prove my worthiness.”
At this, Lucifer began pacing quietly around the room, deep in thought.
He finally spoke, “I have commanded many legions of soldiers over thousands of years. My strategy for EveryMan is to give you access to my greatest weapon…
It is the poison of discouragement.”
“You must forget any and all other commitments and projects you have.”
“You must devote the next decade to one sole mission and purpose… to destroy this man, EveryMan, from the inside out.”
“Discouragement will be your tool.
Learn to yield it with purpose.
It is not a sledgehammer, it is a surgeon’s knife…. and you are the surgeon.
Learn to drop poisonous thoughts like seeds into his mind.
Thoughts that can take root and make him question everything he believes.
Thoughts that can make him question his very existence.
You must make him wonder…
…Am I strong enough?
…Am I worthy enough?
…Do I deserve my destiny?
…Who am I to be great?
…Is it even my destiny?
…Why would God use me?
You MUST get this right.
Plant seeds of doubt AND use every facet of his life to water those seeds!
But be careful, deception is your 2nd greatest tool. EveryMan must believe that these thoughts are his own.
Lucifer stood next to his demonic angel… “This will be your greatest mission.”
“Succeed and you will be the envy of every demon in hell….”
“Fail… and the life of EveryMan will become the story of a LEGEND.”
“You must understand that belief is where faith begins….
Faith is where greatness begins.
To kill greatness, you must kill faith…
To kill faith, you must kill belief…
To kill belief, you must attack the mind and attack the thoughts… for this is where the greatest power of a man is.
Without right thoughts, without faith and belief, the Spirit of God will NOT move.
We crippled EveryMan physically, but until we cripple his thinking, we have done nothing and the anointing will take root.
Lucifer then sent his demonic soldier out to start undermining the destiny, purpose, and anointing of EveryMan.

The Father of Lies Story
This story is powerful because you and I represent EveryMan.
Your past does not dictate your future.
In fact, the harder and more difficult your past has been, the greater your destiny is!
But you have to have the faith to claim it and the courage to suppress the fear we all face.
Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans for a hope and a future.”
Satan is the father of lies.
He will use your own mind (your greatest weapon) against you if you let him.
That’s part of the reason the Bible tells us to take every thought captive… (2 Corinthians 10:5)
You have the seeds of greatness in you!
Your destiny is a powerful purpose.
You were created on purpose,
With a purpose,
And for a purpose!
It’s really exciting stuff!
You are uniquely qualified for what God has called you to do.
You just need to tune in and listen.
All your strengths were given to you for a reason.
You are meant to live a life of purpose and significance, to fulfill the destiny you were created for.
Some of you will read the statement above and start questioning that fact even as you read… Don’t!
That is a prime example of how the father of lies gets in your head!
The story above ends as the main demon leaves to execute his orders.
The end has not yet been written and the same is true in your life.
If you give up hope and resign yourself to a life of mediocrity, you will never fulfill your greatest dreams or find your true purpose.
It’s my desire this has given you hope.
It’s unlike any other writing I’ve posted on this blog.
True purpose and fulfillment in life can only come when you are in tune with what you were created for.
That’s hard to discern if you don’t have a personal relationship with your creator.
Romans 10:9-10 says that “if you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
If you’d like to take that step of repentance, receive salvation, and start a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, simply pray the following prayer with sincerity:
“Lord Jesus, I am a sinner. I’m tired of trying to do things my way. Please come into my heart, forgive me of all my sins, and make me a new creation. I wish to make you my Lord and Savior of my life. I want to serve you from now on. -Amen.”
