For When I am Weak, then I am Strong… The Ultimate Catch-22

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships,in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. –2 Corinthians 12:9-11

Paul was the Yoda of the disciples.
The grand master.

Yet he alluded and even admitted to struggling with something.

We’re not sure what that something was, but there are many theories.

Yet in this verse Paul so eloquently talks about how his weakness as a man points to the strength of Christ.

Even to the point that he says he delights in the weakness… “for when I am weak, then I am strong”.

This verse is the ultimate catch-22.
How does that even work…

When I am weak, then I am strong?

Years of walking with God has taught me the how is less important than the fact that it does work.

It’s like tithing.
Give more and God blesses more.
Why or how it works… I have no idea.
But it works.

Let’s get back to Paul.

Theologians aren’t in agreement as to what his weakness was.
I like to think that God planned it this way by design.
It speaks to everyone.
God was the original creator of evergreen content.

We all have areas in our life we wish we had more strength and more faith.

I am reminded tonight of how weak my faith can be and how easily doubt can creep in.

Sometimes in life and business when things don’t go your way it’s easy to lose faith, even if it’s just for a moment.

This is especially true right now with everything that’s going on in the world.

It’s a normal part of the human condition.

It gives me peace to know that I don’t have to know all the answers (not even most of them).

I don’t need to know what’s around the next corner to know that God is in control.

Even in my times of doubt and weakness, he has everything under control.

He will give me the words, show me wisdom, and lend me his strength when I am weak.

Something entered my life recently that I wasn’t prepared for.

The verse that came to me was Hebrews 11:1 which states “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Keep the faith.
Keep moving forward.

Don’t worry about your weakness and lean into God when you are weak.

My friend Gary recently reminded me to always remember G.G.T., which stands for God’s Got This”.

It’s a great reminder to carry with you every day, regardless of what the day brings.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION/ACTION STEPS

  1. Where in your life are you trying to rely on your own strength instead of leaning into God in your weakness?
  2. Have you lost faith in any area of your life?.. a failing business?… A struggling marriage?… A financial setback?… A child in spiritual rebellion?… In sickness or disease?… Turn that area over to God and let go of control today.
  3. Action Step– Think of a friend who may be losing faith in an area of their life. Reach out to them. Talk with them. Pray with them. Share the hope of this verse with them.

PRAYER

Thank you God for loving me and dying on the cross in spite of my weakness.

Please give me strength in my moments of weakness to submit to your will and allow you to have your way in my life. Show me today somebody who I can impact by reminding them of your strength and of the power of faith.

Conclusion

If you’re here, I’m assuming you already have a relationship with Jesus Christ. But if you don’t, he is available 24 hrs. a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

If you want to start that relationship today, you can do that here.
